Air Canada has confirmed it has suffered a data breach on it mobile app exposing personal details of 20,000 customers.The company said it detected an unusual login behavior in its mobile application between Aug. 22-24, 2018. “We detected unusual login behavior with Air Canada’s mobile App between Aug. 22-24, 2018. We immediately took action to block these attempts and implemented additional protocols to protect against further unauthorized attempts. As an additional security precaution, we have locked all Air Canada mobile App accounts to protect our customers’ data.”The company has 1.7million Air Canada mobile App user profiles out of which approximately one percent or 20,000 profiles may have been accessed by the hackers.The compromised data includes personal data such as name, email address, telephone number, gender, birthdate, nationality and sensitive data such as Passport number, Aeroplan number, NEXUS number, Known Traveller Number, passport expiration date, passport country of issuance and country of residence. The credit card information and Aeroplan password were not compromised in the breach said the company.As soon as intrusion was detected the company took immediate steps to block the attempt and took additional security measures to prevent further attempts.As a precaution, the company locked out all the customers from the Air Canada mobile App accounts and sent an email which contains the instruction to reactivate their account.The company said they have started notifying potentially affected customers directly by emails and advised all users to change their passwords immediately.“We recommend customers regularly review their financial transactions, be aware of any changes in their credit rating, and contact their financial services provider immediately if they become aware of any unusual or unauthorized transactions. Customers should also review Aeroplan transactions and contact Aeroplan immediately if they become aware of any unusual or unauthorized activities.” said in the statement published by Air Canada.
