The Government of India has issued a warning against a massive phishing attack targeting Indian individuals and businesses (small, medium and large enterprises).
The Centre has been notified of a major upcoming phishing attack using Covid-19 as a bait.
The hackers target personal and financial information and also could impersonate government agencies, departments and trade associations.
“Phishing campaigns are expected to be designed to impersonate government agencies, departments and trade associations who have been tasked to oversee the disbursement of the government fiscal aid,” said CERT-In.
Be aware of an email from “[email protected]”
The spoofed email ID which could be used for the phishing mail is expected to be “[email protected]” and the attack campaign is expected to start from 21stJ une 2020.
The malicious group claims to have 2 million individual email addresses. The phishing email subject link would be like free Covid-19 testing for all residents of Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Chennai and Ahmedabad. The emails are designed to drive recipients towards fake websites where they trick people into opening malicious links or entering personal and financial information which can lead to the installation of malware, system freeze or revealing of sensitive information.
Stay alert by practising following CERT-In guidelines
- Never submit personal information to unknown and unfamiliar websites.
- Don’t open uninvited email attachments from known or unknown people.
- Scan and remove suspicious email attachments even if it is from a known sender.
- Use safe browsing tools, filtering tools in your antivirus, firewall and filtering services.
- Be aware of phishing domain, spelling errors in emails, websites
- Leverage pretty good privacy in mail communications.
CERT advised to report any unusual activity or attack at [email protected] with relevant logs, email headers for the analysis of the attacks and taking appropriate actions.
