Iran’s national railway company was hit by a cyberattack on Saturday disrupting train stations across the country with trains delayed or cancelled.

Iran's rail system reportedly came under cyberattack on July 9, with a system designed to track trains failing and hackers posting fake messages on station boards across the country claiming trains had been delayed or cancelled.

The disruption began before noon; the sites were still down five hours later. It was the second cyber attack to hit the ministry’s computer systems in two days.

The Fars news agency reported “unprecedented chaos” at stations with hundreds of delayed or cancelled trains. In the now-deleted report, it said the incident followed “a widespread disruption in … computer systems that is probably due to a cyber-attack.”

The message also urged passengers to call for information and provided the phone number of the office of the country’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

“Fars later removed its report and instead quoted the spokesman of the state railway company, Sadegh Sekri, as saying “the disruption” did not cause any problem for train services,” reported ABC News.

It is still unclear who is behind the attack, and did not say if any ransom demand had been made.

Iran has been targeted by numerous cyberattacks in recent years, including an attack on government infrastructure in 2019.
