Several different waves of distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks have been targeting Tor Network since at least July 2022.
Isabella Dias Fernandes, Tor’s Project’s Executive Director, reported that the techniques and targets of the attacks have continuously changed over time.
“For at least seven months, several different types of the ongoing denial of service (DoS) attacks have affected the Tor network. At some points, the attacks impacted the network severely enough that users could not load pages or access onion services,” explains Dias.
Many times, users were unable to access the TOR Network and faced critical delays while loading pages.
Tor Project is working to improve its network defences and mitigate these attacks. It is still unclear the purpose of these ongoing attacks or the identity of the threat actors.
The Tor Network team will be expanded to include two new members focusing on .onion services development.
BleepingComputer reported that the peer-to-peer network Invisible Internet Project (I2P) has been under heavy DDoS attacks for at least three days. The attacks caused some i2pd routers to crash with out-of-memory errors, rendering the service poor or entirely unusable for some users.
