Delaware County was hit by the DoppelPaymer ransomware attack and paid a ransom of $500,000 to restore their systems.

The County of Delaware discovered a disruption to a portion of its computer network. An investigation was conducted immediately that included taking specific systems offline and working with computer forensic specialists to specify the nature and scope of the event.

The incident was published on Monday, and the threat actors demanded a $500,000 ransom to receive a decryptor.

“The cybercriminals attained control of the network on Saturday encrypting files, comprising police reports, payroll, purchasing, and other databases. Prosecution evidence, however, has not been affected.” reads the post released by Philadelphia’s 6abc’s Action News.

"Sources said the county is in the process of paying the $500,000 ransom as it is insured for such attacks." 

DoppelPaymer ransomware gang was behind the attack and that Delaware County had paid the ransom,” states BleepingComputer.

DoppelPaymer is known to steal unencrypted files and to prevent victims from accessing them.

BleepingComputer reported that the ransomware gang warned Delaware County to change all of their passwords and modify their Windows domain configuration to comprise protection from the Mimikatz program.

Mimikatz is an open-source application commonly utilized by ransomware gangs to harvest Windows domain credentials on a compromised network.
