The discovery of a malicious QR Reader app on Google Play is said to have spread the Anasta Banking Malware.
The Anasta banking malware is an intricate malware used to steal sensitive banking information while impersonating a legitimate QR reader app, highlighting the constant threat posed by malicious apps on official app stores. This stresses the need for users to be more cautious when using the internet.
“The app has already been downloaded thousands of times and has led to the compromise of users’ financial information,” Zscaler TechLabz tweeted on 3rd July 2024.
By accepting the malicious app’s set of permissions, the user allows this nefarious app to operate inconspicuously, remaining undetected for extended periods. Before the unsuspecting user realizes that their activity is being monitored, keystrokes are being captured, creating deceptive login overlays to steal their credentials. Malicious actors can also remotely control the infected devices, allowing them to execute unauthorized transactions.
Following this discovery, Google has taken down this app from the Play Store and is actively working to prevent such attacks from recurring. This is done by strengthening its app vetting processes, including source code review, evaluation of data practices and security features to identify vulnerabilities.
