Indian snacks manufacturer Haldiram suffered a ransomware attack where hackers encrypted all of its data and demanded a ransom of $7,50,000.
According to the FIR lodged at Noida Sector 58 police station, on July 12 and July 13 at about 01:30 am, the firm’s IT department came to know that some of the orders were held up due to problems with the server.
Following this, senior manager (IT) Ashok Kumar Mohanty informed Aziz Khan, DGM (IT) of Haldiram to resolve the issue. On further investigating the servers of the company, Mr Aziz Khan, found out that all servers of the company were hacked and hit by a cyber-attack or malware called a ransomware attack.
It was found that some program was being executed on various IP addresses, and all data of the company was being diverted from the servers of the company. The firm claims that the hackers also left a message declaring that it was a “ransomware attack”. They even threatened to delete all the stolen data if $7,50,000 ransom was not paid to them.
Aziz Khan told TOI that a complaint was given to the cyber cell in July itself, but an FIR was launched two months later and now they have restored their data internally.
“The allegations have been found to be true by our Cyber Cell, which is now probing the case. Whatever points and facts emerge during the probe, the matter would be dealt with accordingly,” Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police, Noida, Ranvijay Singh said.
The FIR has been lodged against unknown accused under Indian Penal Code sections 420 (cheating), 384 (extortion) and under relevant conditions of the Information Technology Act, the police said.
