Italy’s privacy watchdog has banned ChatGPT and ordered OpenAI to sop processing people’s data with immediate effect.

Italy’s privacy watchdog has banned ChatGPT and ordered OpenAI to stop processing people’s data with immediate effect.

OpenAI said it had disabled ChatGPT for users in Italy at the request of Garante.

“We actively work to reduce personal data in training our AI systems like ChatGPT because we want our AI to learn about the world, not private individuals,” OpenAI added.

The Italian watchdog said that it would block OpenAI’s chatbot and investigate whether it complied with General Data Protection Regulation, reports the British media.

Italy, which has provisionally restricted ChatGPT’s use of domestic user’s data, became the first Western country to take action against a chatbot powered by artificial intelligence.

Italy’s national privacy regulator has ordered AI to stop collecting Italian user’s data immediately until it amends its data collection practices.

The Italian watchdog said OpenAI must report to it within 20 days what measures it has taken to ensure users' data privacy or face a fine of up to either €20m (£17.5m) or 4% of annual global revenue. OpenAI has been contacted for comment.
