American department store Kmart suffered a ransomware attack by Egregor gang impacting back-end services of the company.

The company was purchased by Transform Holdco LLC (Transformco) in 2019 – and the holding company is impacted as well. The 88sears.com site, used internally, is offline, which is a state of affairs that employees confirmed to the outlet was due to the ransomware attack.

According to BleepingComputer, Egregor ransomware operators were behind the attack that encrypted devices and servers connected to the network knocking its back-end services.

`KMART’ Windows domain was compromised in the attack as per the ransom note shared with BleepingComputer.

“While online stores continue to operate, the 'Transformco Human Resources Site,' 88sears.com, is currently offline. Employees said that the outage is caused by the recent ransomware attack.”

It is unclear about the data stolen during the attack, how many devices were encrypted, or the ransom amount demanded by the hackers.

Egregor started to steal unencrypted files before deploying their ransomware in September 2020. Later threatens to post the data on ransomware data leak site if a ransom is not paid.

Egregor attacked other companies including Ubisoft, Barnes and Noble and Cencosud.
