Hotel chain Marriott disclosed a second data breach impacting more than 5.2 million hotel guests.
Marriott international
Marriott is an American multinational company with more than 7,300 properties under 30 leading brands around 134 countries and territories.
At the end of February 2020, the hotel chain discovered the data breach where ‘unexpected amounts’ of guest information have been accessed by the hackers using the login credentials of two employees at a franchise property.
The company believes that the activity began in mid-January but did not reveal how it happened.
The company began its investigation and disabled its login credentials immediately.
The following information may have been involved as the intruder(s) had direct access to Marriott Bonvoy loyalty data:
- Contact details (eg; name, mailing address, email address and phone number)
- Loyalty account information (eg; account number and points balance, but not passwords)
- Additional personal details (eg; company, gender and birthdate)
- Partnerships and affiliations (eg; linked airline loyalty programs and numbers)
- Preferences (eg; stay/room preferences and language preference)
“The company currently has no reason to believe that the information involved included Marriott Bonvoy account passwords or PINs, payment card information, national IDs, or driver’s license numbers,” said Marriott.
“We have also set up a self-service online portal for guests to be able to determine whether their information was involved in the incident and, if so, what categories of information were involved,” said Marriott.
In November 2018, the Starwood Hotels reservation system was hacked, where personal details of more than 383 million hotel guests, including passport numbers, were stolen.
