Dollar Tree was affected by a third-party data breach involving 1,977,486 people following the hack of Zeroed-In Technologies.
The Dollar Tree Company operates both Dollar Tree and Family Dollar stores in 23,000 locations throughout the United States and Canada.
According to a data breach notification filed with the Maine Attorney General, Dollar Tree's service provider, Zeroed-In, suffered a security incident between August 7 and 8, 2023.
Dollar Tree and Family Dollar employees' personal information was stolen during this cyberattack.
Although the investigation confirmed that these systems were accessed, it could not guarantee all of the files accessed or taken by the unauthorized actor.
To determine what information was present at the time of the incident, Zeroed-In reviewed the contents of the systems.
Social Security numbers (SSNs), names, and birth dates were stolen as part of the attack.
As a result of the security breach, Zeroed-In has notified the affected individuals and enclosed instructions for enrolling in a twelve-month identity protection and credit monitoring service.
Besides Dollar Tree and Family Dollar, other Zeroed-In customers may also have been affected, but this has not been confirmed.
The Zeroed-In team has been contacted with similar questions, but no response has been received since publication.
As a result of the scale of the data breach, law firms have already begun investigating potential class-action lawsuits against Zeroed-In.
