An unidentified person allegedly hacked an online question bank of the Central University of Punjab.
As many as 13 subjects exams held from July 6-8 got cancelled after its online question bank was compromised.
Previously exams were held by using intranet in the campus but currently due to the COVID-19 situation, teachers and students were at their homes, and for their convenience, University had opted for conducting online exams for this academic session.
Even though the system had been password-enabled, it's compromised at some unknown level. To check the effectiveness of the firewall, two mock exams were conducted.
Professor Kohli said that he had received an email from an unknown person stating that the question bank used to conduct online exams hacked, and a link was also given, clicking on which gave access to all the questions.
“Teachers have been asked to prepare question papers for all subjects, and new dates of tests will be announced soon, ” he said.
The email received was from ProtonMail, a highly sophisticated cyber platform which is an end-to-end encrypted and paid email service.
The email sender had stated that the “online examination application (developed by CUP) is faulty and a number of students were unable to sit for the test”.
When the authorities checked, they found that some group of students who had earlier scored fewer marks have secured exceptionally well with more than 92 per cent in this online examination session, much higher than other students. The University has shared those details with the police.
The authorities have filed a complaint with police and conduct an enquiry at the varsity level.
DeputyPolice Superintendent (DSP) Aswant Dhaliwal the investigating officer, said the investigation is going from all the angles and they are checking whether the hacker is linked with the University or a trained individual or a part of a behind-the-crime team.
