Researchers have discovered over 35 million US voters records for sale on a forum in the Dark web. According to researchers Anomali Labs and Intel471 who analysed the data the records contain personal data and voting history of millions of US residents. “Anomali Labs researchers in close partnership with Intel 471, a leading cybercrime intelligence provider, have uncovered a widespread unauthorized information disclosure of US voter registration databases. To be clear, this voter information is made generally available to the public for legitimate uses.” Researchers described the data to be valid with a high degree of confidence. In the list, the seller only provided the number for records for three states which are Louisiana (3 million), Wisconsin (6 million) and Texas (14 million) for a price rate between $1,300 and $12,500. The remaining states in the list are Montana, Iowa, Utah, Oregon, South Carolina, Wisconsin, Kansas, Georgia, New Mexico, Minnesota, Wyoming, Kentucky, Idaho, South Carolina, Tennessee, South Dakota, Mississippi, and West Virginia.
The price range differs from $150 to $12,500 depending on the state. The seller also mentions that the voter list is updated on a weekly basis and information are received via contacts within the state government. “Certain states require the seller to personally travel to locations in-state to receive the updated voter information. This suggests the information disclosure is not necessarily a technical compromise but rather a likely targeted campaign by a threat actor redistributing possibly legitimately obtained voter data for malicious purposes on a cybercrime forum.” said in the post published by Anomali Labs. The record contains personal details of voter such as full name, phone numbers, physical addresses, voting history, and other unspecified data. Within hours of sale advertisement, many members have shown interest in buying the data and with this data available publicly for anyone is a serious threat to US voters and US elections.
