Hackers leaked personal data of Belarusian police officers in reprisal to violent police crackdown on street demonstrations against President Lukashenka.
Data leak
Anonymous hackers leaked the personal information of 1,000 police officers in revenge for a crackdown in which many have been detained.
Hundreds of people complained of beatings and mistreatment in custody, but the government has denied abusing detainees.
“As the arrests continue, we will continue to publish data on a massive scale, ” said a message distributed by the opposition news channel Nexta Live on the messaging app Telegram.
“No one will remain anonymous even under a balaclava.”
The published list contains personal information of Belarusian police officers, including their surnames, names, date of birth, patronymics, phone numbers and addresses, the units in which they serve, their job titles and ranks.
The government said that those responsible for the data leak would be found and punished, which was widely circulated on Telegram channels on Saturday.
According to NEXTA, the information came from anonymous hackers known as “cyber partisans.”
“The forces, means and technologies at the disposal of the internal affairs bodies make it possible to identify and prosecute the overwhelming majority of those guilty of leaking personal data on the Internet, ” stated Olga Chemodanova, the spokeswoman for the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
The eastern European country fell following a presidential election last month that Lukashenko explains he won by a landslide, but the opposition says he was rigged.
According to the human rights organisations, Viasna, the hacked details were published after around 400 women were detained during a women's marathon September 19.
Thousands have been detained and many beaten by Lukashenko’s security forces. The faces of security forces are often obscured by masks, balaclava or riot helmets. Some protesters have physically torn off the masks of some officers.
