Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Twitter account was compromised, and a tweet was sent claiming the country has adopted Bitcoin.

“The matter was escalated to Twitter, and the account has been immediately secured," said the Indian PM's office in a tweet on Sunday.

"In the brief period that the account was compromised, any Tweet shared must be ignored," added officials.

The screenshot read: "India has officially accepted bitcoin as legal tender. The government has officially bought 500 BTC" and would be "distributing them to all residents of the country."

The tweet has been deleted, and along with it, a scam link was also attached.

According to the investigation, the hacking incident indicated a one-off attack that only targeted a specific account.

Last year, the Twitter account for the personal website of PM Modi was hacked by an unknown group and asked followers to donate cryptocurrency to a relief fund.

The incident also came when India took a tough stance on cryptocurrency, with the government proposing introducing a law to deal with the issue.
