Last month British Airways announced a data breach exposing personal and financial data of 380,000 customers

  • A second breach was discovered by British Airways impacting 185,000 customers.

  • Hackers have accessed personal and financial data of 77,000 customers and a further 108,000 customers without CVV number.

Last month British Airways announced a data breach exposing personal and financial data of 380,000 customers. According to IAG, the parent company of British Airways while investigating a second breach was discovered impacting further 185,000 customers. The second breach happened between April 21 and July 28 affecting customers who made reward bookings using payment cards. Hackers have accessed personal data such as name, billing address, email address and card payment data such as card number, expiry date and CVV of 77,000 customers. An additional 108,000 customers personal data and financial data were accessed without CVV number. “While we do not have conclusive evidence that the data was removed from British Airways’ systems, we are taking a prudent approach in notifying potentially affected customers, advising them to contact their bank or card provider as a precaution. Customers who are not contacted by British Airways by Friday 26 October at 1700 GMT do not need to take any action.” said in the post published by the company. The company also said in the first breach instead of 380,000 customers only 244,000 were affected in the breach. In the first breach personal and financial data of customers who made the booking through the company’s website and app between 22:58 BST August 21, 2018, and 21:45 BST September 5, 2018, were compromised in the breach. The company said they have notified all customers about the breach through email and till now they did not find any verified cases of fraud.
