SRP Federal Credit Union, based in North Augusta, South Carolina, has reported a significant data breach affecting over 240,000 individuals. The breach occurred between September 5 and November 4, during which unauthorized to the credit union’s systems was detected.
After securing its systems and informing law enforcement, SRP Federal Credit Union conducted a review of the compromised files. They found that the files contained sensitive information of affected individuals, including names, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, driver’s licence numbers, and other financial details like account numbers as well as credit or debit card numbers.
SRP Federal Credit Union clarified that the cyberattack did not affect its online banking or core processing systems, so members were able to access their accounts and perform transactions securely through these systems.
To assist those impacted, the credit union is offering one year of free identity protection services, although it emphasized there is no evidence of any misuse of the stolen information. The notification encouraged individuals to utilize the complimentary credit monitoring offered.
A ransomware gang took credit for the cyber-attack on SRP Federal Credit Union, the credit union has not disclosed the exact nature of the cyberattack, the timing of the public disclosure coincided with the ransomware group Nitrogen adding SRP Federal Credit Union to its Tor-based leak site, suggesting the possibility of a ransomware attack.
