The Ukrainian Defence ministry has sent out a call for volunteers to join a cyber force to defend against attacks from Russia.

“Ukrainian cybercommunity! It's time to get involved in the cyber defence of our country," the post read, asking hackers and cybersecurity experts to submit an application via Google docs, listing their specialities, such as malware development, and professional references.

The request was issued on Thursday morning as Russia began to invade Ukraine.

Yegor Aushev, the co-founder of a cybersecurity company in Kyiv, told Reuters that he wrote the post at the request of a senior Defence Ministry official who reached him on Thursday. Aushev's firm Cyber Unit Technologies is known for working with Ukraine's government on the defence of critical infrastructure.

The effort to build a cyber military force is coming late in the game, Aushev admitted.Aushev said the volunteers would be divided into defensive and offensive cyber units.

The defensive unit would be employed to defend infrastructures such as power plants and water systems.

Aushev said he is organising the offensive volunteer unit to help Ukraine's military conduct digital espionage operations against invading Russian forces.

Aushev also reported that they have received hundreds of applicants and were going to begin vetting to ensure that one of them were a Russian agent.

According to researchers at cybersecurity firm ESET, another piece of destructive software was found circulating in Ukraine, on Wednesday hitting hundreds of computers.
