Swedish car manufacturer Volvo has disclosed a data breach revealing that threat actors have stolen R&D data from its server.

One of the companies’ file repositories was illegally accessed and a limited amount of R&D data was stolen during the intrusion by a third party.

“Volvo Cars has become aware that one of its file repositories has been illegally accessed by a third party. Investigations so far confirm that a limited amount of the company's R&D property has been stolen during the intrusion” said in the statement published by Volvo.

The company also said that based on the information available there may be an impact on the company’s operation.

“The company does not see, with currently available information, that this has an impact on the safety or security of its customers' cars or their personal data.”

The company implemented security countermeasures immediately after detecting unauthorized access.

Volvo notified the incident to relevant authorities and is working with third-party experts to investigate the incident.

The company did not disclose any other details regarding the incident but according to Bleeping computer Snatch Ransomware gang has already claimed the attack.

The threat actor group has also released 35.9 MB of data that they claim to be stolen from Volvo servers during the attack.

Volvo refused to comment on the incident when asked and replied back "Volvo Cars does not comment on speculation about potential cyber security attacks but takes all potential threats to its cyber security and thefts of its property seriously," 

"Cyber security is an integral part and a top priority of our global development work and operations. Volvo Cars actively participates in and contributes to the international work on standardization and best practices, and apply industry-accepted recommendations on cyber security."
