  • The Website of the Alaska Health Department was the target of a recent malware attack.
  • The COVID-19 vaccination appointment scheduling and data dashboards were not impacted.

The websites of the Alaska Health Department were forced offline on Monday evening by a malware attack and the authorities launched an investigation.

The Health Department said in a statement late Tuesday that its website was taken offline on Monday, and the report did not disclose when the cyberattack took place.

Clinton Bennett, a department spokesperson, said the department could not reveal the information “due to security reasons, and so we do not jeopardise the investigation.”

“At this time, there are no details about who initiated the attack, why they targeted DHSS, whether this attack is related to any other recent attacks, or how long the website may be down, ” said the Department of Health and Social Services.

Even though websites are down, some COVID-19 vaccine appointment scheduling services and the dashboard can still be accessed as outside sources host them.

Authorities launched an investigation into the incident, and they did not provide any intrusion. It is still unclear who initiated the attack, how hackers gained access to the network and how they implanted malicious code.

“Investigators are determining whether any personal or confidential information was compromised, and the department will notify any partners, vendors or individuals who may be identified as being affected,” says the health department.
