"Respect for your privacy is coded into our DNA,"states WhatsApp’s privacy policy. "Since we started WhatsApp, we've built our Services with a set of strong privacy principles in mind."
WhatsApp will share data with Facebook Companies, including Facebook Payments, Facebook Technologies, Onavo and CrowdTangle.
By tapping AGREE, you accept the new terms and privacy policy, which take effect on February 8, 2021,” reads the notification sent to the WhatsApp users.
If Users do not agree to the updated policy, they will lose access to the app or not be able to use all the features and could delete their accounts.
“After this date, you’ll need to accept these updates to continue using WhatsApp. You can also visit the Help Center if you would prefer to delete your account and would like more information.”
The move aims to promote safety and improve the user’s experience with targeting advertising.
WhatsApp currently shares certain information with Facebook companies, including account registration data (such as phone number), service-related information and transaction data. It also shares information on how users interact with others (including businesses) when using its services, mobile device information, IP addresses.
It may “include other information identified in the Privacy Policy section entitled ‘Information We Collect’ or obtained upon notice to you or based on your consent,” said WhatsApp.
Information collected from its users also includes payment information, location data and device diagnostics data.
Regarding transactions and payment data, if users use WhatsApp’s payment services or other financial transactions, the firm processes additional information including payment account and transaction information (for example, information about your payment method, shipping details and transaction amount).
Regarding location information, with user permission, WhatsApp collects and uses precise location information from its device. Even if users do not use location-related features, WhatsApp uses IP addresses and other information like phone number area codes to estimate their general location.
