Xfinity stands as a prominent brand under Comcast Cable Communications, LLC, a subsidiary of Comcast Corporation. Offering a diverse range of services encompassing cable television, internet, telephone, and home security solutions, Xfinity holds a significant position as a leading provider of broadband internet and cable TV services throughout the United States.
Approximately two weeks following the release of security updates by Citrix to mitigate a critical vulnerability identified as Citrix Bleed or CVE-2023-4966, the telecommunications company discovered indications of malicious activity within its network. This suspicious activity was observed to have occurred between October 16 and October 19.
Following a comprehensive examination of the impacted systems and data, Xfinity concluded on December 6, 2023, that the compromised customer information encompassed usernames along with hashed passwords, as stated by the company.
Moreover, for certain customers, additional information might have been compromised, potentially encompassing details like names, contact information, the last four digits of social security numbers, dates of birth, and/or secret questions and answers. Nonetheless, the analysis of the data is an ongoing process.
Comcast disclosed in a filing with Maine's attorney general's office that the breach impacted approximately 35.8 million individuals. The media and technology conglomerate informed affected customers about the breach via its website and through email notifications, as stated by the company on Monday. Comcast attributed the intrusion to a vulnerability found in software supplied by the cloud computing company Citrix.
The company urged customers to reset their passwords immediately and strongly advised them to activate multi-factor authentication for enhanced security measures.
